Sigma 30mm f/1.4 OH YEAH BABY!

I LOVE THIS LENS! I MEAN I REALLY LOVE THIS LENS! I MEAN I REALLY REALLY REALLY LOVE THIS LENS!
I WILL BE TALKING ABOUT THE CANON VERSION, BUT THIS LENS IS AVAILABLE FOR ANY BRAND!
Before this lens I only had one Sigma in my kit, it's a Sigma 150mm f/2.8 Macro! The 150mm is THE SHARPEST LENS that I own. It's even sharper than my Nikon 200mm f/2! I, like many people have a small little voice in the back of my head anytime I look at lenses that aren't Nikon or Canon! But the 150mm convinced me to stop listening to that voice.
When I ordered the Canon 60D I got the 50mm f/1.8. I started with the 50mm because everyone should have that lens in their system. It's only $125.00, extremely sharp and very fast at 1.8! But I got a Canon mostly for video and the Canon 50mm f/1.8 is not good for video at all! Ok, maybe I shouldn't say at all, it's not good for manual focus with video at all! The focus ring is too slim and it's badly placed at the front of the lens. It makes it very uncomfortable for Manual focusing.
So off to find a suitable replacement for the Canon 50mm f/1.8, ok not replacement...addition!

Canon 60D, Sigma 30mm f/1.4 @ f/3.5, 1/30th, ISO 100
I LOVE THE FLARE AND BOKEHTHIS LENS HAS!
I do have to give it major props because it is extremely sharp! But for video it has two major flaws, the first is that for our type of video work 50mm on a crop camera like the Canon 60D is just a little too long. The second is we love doing manual focus with video and the focus ring is too small.
We decided on the Sigma because at 30mm it's about a 50mm on the crop factor of the Canon 60D! This is perfect. It's not super wide, but it's not super long! It's actually pretty perfect! It's very and I mean very well priced at $489.00. It's got a great focus ring for manual focus and it's pretty rugged! This is the one!
I had heard on the Misinfornet (Code name for Internet) that it was soft, bad copies and all this other crapola! Yechiel even warned me that I could have to Micro Adjust the Focusing thing to make it sharp!
When it arrived I took it out of it's case, really nice case and put it on the Canon 60D! There was an immediate difference in the feel of the Canon 60D! You could feel the autofocus speed increase immediately, I'm a happy camper! Glass is everything folks, and although the Canon 50mm is great, it's definitely not a "professional" lens. I mean it's inexpensive, plastic and the camera's motor moves it. I'm not saying you can't use it professionally, I'm just saying that it's not meant to take abuse!
The Sigma on the other hand is a gorgeous piece of equipment! It feels solid, focuses extremely fast and goes all the way down to f/1.4! I'm in love!

Canon 60D, Sigma 30mm f/1.4 @ f/4, 1/200th, ISO 400
Like I stated in the Canon 60D review (CLICK HERE TO READ IT), one of the main reasons I'm not personally sold on the Canon 60D is the Autofocus. Not that it's bad, it's just not as good as it should be. I'm comparing it to my Nikon D7000 and where the Nikon locks on, the 60D just searches and searches and never finds the lock! I tried the Canon 60D with 3 different lenses, the 50mm f/1.8, the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 and the Sigma 30mm f/1.4. The Sigma had the best Autofocus with the 60D. Granted it is a f/1.4 lens which allows more light into the camera, but I also think the built in motor helped it as well!

Canon 60D, Sigma 30mm f/1.4 @ f/2, 1/10th, ISO 100
(The black lines around Colby is ambient light motion blur, the shutter speeds where too slow and Colby was illuminated by the ambient light as well, if I would have had rear/second curtain sync on the flash it could have helped this out a lot...CURSES CANON!!)
If you are thinking of getting this lens, or need something that is a little wider than your 50mm, this is it! Don't even look at any other brand or lens! Don't listen to the misinfornet and just buy it. If you get it from a place like Bhphoto.com you have the best customer service and if anything is not up to par, they will gladly take it back!

Canon 60D, Sigma 30mm f/1.4 @ f/4, 1/5000th, ISO 400
As far as image quality is concerned I compared it to a couple of lenses I have, although they are on the Nikons so I'm not sure how well that can actually compare! But the $200 Nikon 35mm f/1.8, $450 Nikon 50mm f/1.4 and the Sigma were all shot! At f/1.4 the 50mm Nikon and Sigma where both softer than I would like, but hey it's f/1.4! You know how hard it is to make really fast glass! So if you put it into perspective it's bad ass! The only f/1.4 lens I know that is extremely sharp at f/1.4 is the Nikon 24mm f/1.4 and it's $2000.00, yes I said $2000.00! How much sharper, well definitely not $1,500.00 sharper! So for under $500, this baby is beautiful!
Us as photographers have to learn to put stuff into perspective. I know a ton of photographers that say, only buy Nikon glass, or only buy Canon glass or only buy this or that! If you limit yourself you're going to be just that - limited! Why be limited, we are artist and a limited artist is well....not an artist!
I highly and I mean highly recommend this Sigma 30mm f/1.4! I am madly in love with everything about it, the image quality is excellent for a $489 f/1.4 lens, the build quality is great for a $489 f/1.4 lens and does it really matter that it says Sigma instead of Canon or Nikon - NO! I can give you a long and I mean very long list of crappy lenses that both Canon and Nikon make!
So the moral of this is - DON'T LIMIT YOURSELF!
If you want or are thinking of getting a 30mm, look at this Sigma 30mm, I'm very happy with it as you can read and I'm sure you will be too! This lens has changed my first opinion on the Canon 60D, it just goes to show how good glass can either make or break a camera.
